MARRIED 8 v. SINGLE 9

The return match, Married v. Single, was played at Brownlee Park oh Saturday in perfect v, oathor and attracted a fair number of spectators. As the result of a dry ground a fast and interesting game was witnessed, and as the score indicates was evenly contested. The erectu nof goal posts gave the ground an old-time and business-like appearance. Mr Owen Passau gave every satisfaction with the whistle. At the conclusion of the match afternoon tea was served to the players by the ladies. Following were the teams:

Married : D. Thomas, B. Field, W. Simonsen, L. Smith, A. Reade (Capt.), J. Dobson, J. Lovell, W. Blaylock, J. Buncombe, A. Scott, D. Hedgland, W. G. Twidle, and C. Opie. Single: J. Simpson, L. Twidle, F. Johnston; W. Ovsman, M. O’Connor, J. Campbell, F. Simpson, W. Beatty, D. Nees, P. Vercoe, A. Hears. B. Coleman, W. Pike, and N. Wratt. For the Married team, A. Reade and F. Field scored, Reade converting the latter from a difficult ang'e. bor the Single men Joe Simpson, who played a dashing game throughout, secured three tries, none of which were converted.

_ Play started at about 3.20 with tbe Singles playing down the field. They were soon pressing in their opponents 25, when Eeade relieved with a welldirected kick to the side-line. Play now shifted to Single’s 25, and Married were awarded a free kick opposite the posts, and Dobson’s effort at goal went wide of the mark. Dobson was shortly afterwards entrusted with another attempt to score from a penalty kick, but the ball again went wide. On play resuming the Marrieds were again pressed, but Field saved with a fine kick to the sideline. From another penalty Eeade assayed a place kick from a difficult angle but was not successful. The first quarter ended with no score. Changing round, the Singles were soon pressing their opponents at the top end of the ground, when Joe Simpson, picking up the ball, smartly scored near the corner. A shot at goal was disallowed owing to a breach. Singles 3, Married nib From the kick off, give and take play followed, first one side and the other gaining advantage. D/ Nees initiated a good passing run, ending in J. Simpson clearing the opposing backs and placing the ball between the uprights. Nees failed to convert. Singles 6, Married nil. From the start of the third quarter Marrieds pushed the play up hill and looked like scoring, Simonsen, Dobson and Eeade being conspicuous. By good defensive play, Singles forced play to the centre of tbe fHd, but Dobson, by a profitable kick, again shifted play into Single’s 25. Marrieds now made strenuous efforis to score, and the first opening was taken advantage of. Len Smith, starting one of the best passing runs of the day, passed to Simonsen, who transferred to Eeade, the last-named tailing over the line near the corner. Dobson failed to add the major points. Singles 6, Married 3. Play now shifted to Singles 25. A good sideline kick by Dobson, however, again centred play, J, Simpson then made the most sensational run of the day. Picking up the ball from half-way, he cleanly evaded all the opposing backs and scored. Coleman missed an easy kick at goal. Singles 9, Married 3. Fast give and. take play followed. A good passing rush between L. Smith, Dobson, and Eeade, ended in the ball going over the sideline within the Singles 25. Marrieds were then awarded another free kick in a good position, and Eeade made a good attempt to increase the score. Marrieds, playing’down hill, commenced the last quarter with considerable dash, and within a few minutes had the Singles forced down. Marrieds were then awarded * free kick opposite the posts, but the at tempt at goal again failed. Marrieds continued to press. Exciting play close to Singles line ended in F. Field scoring at the corner. Prom the most difficult angle of the match Eeade sent the ball neatly between the uprights, thus registering the only goal of the day. With only two minutes time and the score 8-9 against them Marrieds rallied for a supreipe effort, ' and what looked like a certain try . was checked through a false cry of whistle. The game ended Singles 9, i Marrieds 8. I

It is probable that these friendly contests will be continued at weekly or fortnightly intervals throughout the winter.
