NATIONAL SERVICE BRANCH.

COUNTY OP BOUNDS DISTRICT COMMITTEE. Tho first meeting of the above Committee was held at Portage on the 22nd inst., when the following appointments were made: — Chairman: Mr Grimsdale Anderson ; Delegates to Central Committee (if set up) : Mr Anderson and Mr F. C. Fell; Trustees for Soldiers’ Farms: Messrs H. A. McCormick, F. 0. C. Fell, and C. P. Harris. It was decided that meetings of the Committee should be held at Portage the second Saturday in the month, beginning with the second Saturday in June, providing no urgent business came up in the meantime. After the arranging of routine and other business the following motion on cool-storage, moved by Mr F. Fell and seconded by Mr W. Henderson, was carried: — “That in view of the serious effects of submarining on the carrying capacity of the world's shipping, and that New Zealand, being so far away from the war centre, may, in the near future have its shipping facilities very materially reduced, the Government be urged to take steps at once to largely increase the cold-storage accommodation of the Dominion. That to finance the scheme a loan be floated within the Dominion, and costs of interest, maintenance, etc., ba guaranteed by a universal income tax on all producers of perishable goods in the Dominion.” The following financial motion, j proposed by Mr Anderson and supported by Mr F. Fell, was also carried: — “That this Committee wish to bring under the notice of the National Efficiency Board the neccessity of the Government accepting Government War Stock in lieu of cash in payment of excess profits tax, otherwise money that would be available for War loan would be held up until the tax is collected.” It was decided to send on both these motions for the consideration of the National Efficiency Board, as the Committee considered them to be matters of considerable importance. It is proposed to advertise the setting up of the County of Sounds District Committee by a printed , notice displayed in all post and telephone offices throughout the district. Information as to the objects and scope of the Committee and Board of Trustees for Soldiers’ Farms will be furnished by the honorary secretary, Mr E. D. Fell, Nikau Bay, Pelorus Sound. Mr Fell will also be glad to receive, and bring before the Committee, any suggestions or business bearing upon the work of the National Service Board.
