CANVASTOWN.

(From our own Correspondent.) At a patriotic euchre party, held in the Debating Hall on Wednesday evening, Mr Finlayson woo the gentleman’s prize and Mrs Ball the ladies’ prize. The “ booby ” prizes were won by M« Smart and Mr Ghas. Hart. The prizes were handed back to the Society by the winners. Mrs S, Ball has received news from England that her brother, Mr W. Wright, of the 6th Horse Guards, who three months ago was recommended for the Victoria Cross, has been “ gassed ” on the Continent. Mrs Ball’s stepfather and three brothers are all in action in France or Flanders. News has been received that Trooper “ Jacky ’’ McDonald, grandson of Mrs Peter Hemi, of Oanvastown, has been killed in action, and a large tangi will presently be held, at the Wairau Pah, in his honor. The weather is extremely mild for this time of the year, and there are indications of an early spring. A laud-slip came down into Mr Alquist’s house during the rain last week, and gave those indoors a terrible fright. Beyond making a shocking mess no serious damage was done. The Oanvastown factory is one of those which can congratulate itself on the results achieved during the past season. This factory shipped one consignment, through Messrs Bray Bros., of Wellington, and obtained up to 100* per cwt. for some of its cheese shipments. A very pleasing occurrence took place recently when the season’s results came before the directors, and a cheque for one thousand pounds was received from Messrs Bray Bros, in payment of the surpluses on consignment up to the present time. This amount is a profit over and above the advance made bv the agents on previous shipments of cheese.
