The Dardanelles
ENGINEER OFFICER’S STORY London, Aug. 1, An Engineer officer gives a vivid picture of the Dardanelles warfare. He says the engineer is supreme. “ Every man is an engineer. They sally forth every day, going from the dug-out to view the saun old enemy trenches sixty yards awa through the periscopes, of which they have thousands. There is never a sign of a man, but many shovelfuls of earth going over the parapet and saphead. Day after day they are steadily advancing towards us, and there is great excitement when new approaches are broken out. This is a battle all along the line, and at points wo ate at very dose grips. All we dare do is to throw stones like schoolboys, but the stones are bombs.”
