AT A CRICKET MATCH.
There was an amusing instance .once of an incapable batsman being helped to get a few runs. He had plaintively stated that he had never reached double figures in hie life, so a deep plot Was hatched to allow him to get ten. Everyone had strict orders not to get him out, and the player was sent in first. One of the bowlers; however, inadvertently sent down a straight ball, but the umpire, with great presence of mind, saved the situation. As the; offstump fell he called out “No ball." By much ingenuity, such as the falling of the fielders when chasing the ball, the happy batsman made ten, when he was at once bowled. . Then he retired amid thunders of applause, the ironical character of which ho never discovered !
