EDUCATION BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Marlborough Education Board was held last Tuesday. There were present : Messrs R. McCallum (Chairman), E. H. Penny, J. Fulton, A. Mackay, 0. Ferguson, C. Nees, J. Storey, J. Conolly, and J. J. White. TEAGHBRBHIPS Mr John F. Wells was appointed teacher 'at Canvastown on the recommendation of the Committee. The following appointments were made or approved:— Miss O’Dohoghue, Nydia Bay ; Miss Helen Scott, Opouri Valley ; Miss Sarah Hutchinson, Opihi Bay ; Miss E. Mapp, Portage; Miss M. Arthur, Scarborough Run ; Miss Janet E. Dalziel, Black Point. Miss Agnes Elvira O’Sullivan was, on the recommendation of the committee, appointed temporary sole teacher at Riverlands during Miss Chapman’s holiday leave. It was resolved to call for fresh applications for the teachership at Te Awaite. GENERAL A grant of was made for the building of a woodshed at Okaramio, and, with regard to the waW’-supply, it was resolved to give Mrs Johnston notice to close her gates. Mr Nees reported having sold material of the old school-house at Deep Creek for £6. The Carluke Committee applied for a grant of /10 jio clear logs off the school property. The! ward members were deputed to inspect the grouuds and have power to expend up to £& if they thought advisable. The matter of closing the Endeavour Inlet school during building alterations was left to the discretion of the Committee. An application from Miss King, teacher at Kenepuru, for ten days’ extra leave of absence at Easter was referred to the Committee. The Inspector (Mr D. Strachan) reported on the steps he had taken with a view to the establishment of a dressmaking class for teachers. CONGRATULATIONS

Mr Ferguson moved as follows: - “ That the Board congratulate the teachers on the success they have achieved in their efforts to gain certificate qualifications. six having gained full D, and nine others partial D. The certificated teachers also deserve a word of commendation on their success in improving their status, four obtaining a full G, one a partial D, and one a partial C, while two passed in four subjects of C, three in two subjects of C, and one in one subject of C.” The following were described as the principal Marlborough results in the recent teachers’ examinations Passed 0 : Gertrude F. Brewer, Eveline E. Duggan, Kathleen Hilliard, Agnes Elvira O’Sullivan. Passed D : Susan C. Bell, Frances Campbell, Dorothy M. Cheek, Grace Lilian Godfrey, Isabella Nevison, Agnes Cowthron O’Brien. Partial C : Frances Campbell, Nellie K. Chapman. Partial D; Adelina Maud Coward, Eileen M. Duggan, Dorothy E. Ensor, Alice J. Greville, Margaret M. Harris, Kate Anne Howard, Margaret M. Johnson, 0. H. Skelley, Bertha Wadsworth. Pour subjects of G : Josephine Hilliard, Doris Prichard. Two subjects of C : Grace L. Godfrey, Hedley Oldham, Miss E. A. Wallace. One subject of C : Itta Macalister. The Chairman seconded the motion, which was carried. The meeting then terminated.
