SPEECH BY LORD ROSEBERY ' London, Jan. 14. Lord Rosebery, speaking at Glasgow, referred to Lord Roberts’ serious criticisms of the Territorials, and said such warnings should carry enormous weight. Moreover, England was now embraced within the Continental system, and committed to vague liabilities and obligations which might lead us into the greatest war since Napoleon. He did not criticise Sit Edward Grey, but he contended that if our obligations under our foreign policy were accepted we must be prepared to make the liability good. Increased Wages. Wellington, Last Night. At a meeting of Cabinet on Satur« day it was decided to increase the wages of railway men in the second division to a minimum of 9s per day. This will mean an extra cost of £4OOO to the' dominion. Excursion to Picton Wellington, Last Night. As William Morris was driving a horse and hearse to a funeral at Tawa Plat yesterday , a swarm of bees attacked the horse, which bolted and capsized the hearse... The coffin was not injured. 1 Three Coy A Drowned Melbourne, Jan. 15. Two boys named Ernest Butler and James Oonolly were,fishing from a boat on Lake Oopecope, when the boat capsized. William Butler swam to their assistance, but the three boys were drowned. Labour Joining Forces Melbourne, Jan. 15. The Federal Labour Conference on Saturday carried a motion in favour of the Commonwealth Labour Unions federating with those in New Zealand. The Federal Prime Minister says the decision is timely. Baker’s Dreadful Crime. , Attinge, Jan. 13. Makovao, a master baker, fatally poisoned a family of tan at Podgorica by supplying them with -rolls containing potassium cyanide. The crime, which was on the day of a daughter’s betrothal, was committed out of revenge for her refusing to marry Makovao, who was subsequently arrested, but committed suicide in his cell. A Brutal Pair. Paris, Jan. 13. sentenced to 20 years’ penal servitude at Baron de Couvrigny’s son Robert was Caen for shooting his father dead, at Ms mother’s instigation. The. mother was sentenced to death. The Baron stopped the drunken Baroness’ credit, and the murder was then planned in the presence of a depraved 15 year old maid servant. After futile attempts to poison food, the Baroness plied her son with absinthe, and selected a dark avenue for an am■bush. She afterwards sought to incriminate a respectable farmer; The mother and son made full confessions, but they did not show the slightest contrition for their crime.
