The Glebe Murder
A YOUNG MAN ARRESTED. CABINET MINISTER RESIGNS. Melbourne, Nov. 24. Acting on instructions from the Sydney police the detectives here arrested Campbell Moir, a dentist’s assistant, aged nineteen, and charged him with murdering Mr Trevascus at Glebe. Detectives learned that a young man answering the published description of the suspect applied to a dentist for employment, They went to Essendon, where they discovered Moir living in a furnished room with his wife. His finger prints have been taken f-r comparison with those found on the door of Mr Trevascus’ room.
Moir, who was recently married, left Sydney with his wife on the Sunday after the murder. They have since been living in Melbourne under the namte of Carmichael. The Sydney police / obtained specimens of handwriting which it is stated compare with that in a letter addressed to Mr Trevascus from Penrith stating that Moir would call on him.
i Nov. 25. J Moir was remanded to appear at < Sydney. The police evidence showed that when arrested he gavel his name as Carmichael, and stated’ that he lived at Ballarat, and had never been in Sydney. He afterwards admitted that his name was Moir, that he knew Trevascus, and wrote a letter to him signed “Fisher,” offering to sell platinum pins, through which he was traced.
Sydney, Noy. 25. An evening newspaper was responsible lor the statement that Moir is a nephew of Mr Carmichael, Minister of Labour.
; In the Assembly Mr McGowen announced that Mr Carmichael had decided to sever his connection with the Ministry, much against the wish of his colleagues. After bearing what Mr Carmichael had to say, however, there was no alternative but to accept bis resignation. He wished, to declare in the most public manner that he hoped the severance would be only temporary. Several members of the Opposition expressed sorrow at the resignation of Mr Carmichael.
