WHAT FINGERS AND FINGERNAILS BETRAY.
A person of broad nails is usually of gentle nature, timid and bashful.
Those of us whose nails grow into the flesh at the sides are given to luxury. '
Melancholy and sickly people have invariably pale or lead-coloured nails, while persons of a martial, choleric nature have, as a rule, red and spotted nails.
Small nails are characteristic of the obstinate, and broad, elliptical nails of both students and persons of liberal sentiments. >
Narrow nails indicate a quarrelsome disposition, and a white mark on the nails bespeaks misfortune. It is also possible to tell the character from the little cushions or mounds at the base of each finger. If v the mound is large on the first finger, for instance, it is a sign that the owner loves power, coupled with a desire to shine, a tendency to superstition, and a fondness for nature. If the mound be wanting, the person is narrow-minded and selfish. prominent mound on the second finger indicates prudence and probability of success. The reverse, however, indicates lack of ambition. ' A large mound on the third finger—the finger of arts—proves that a man is amiable and hopeful, a delightful companion and an excellent friend. But if the mound be excessive, the results are disastrous. A love of notoriety converts the life into a vainglorious existence, with a tendency to avarice and. a certain direction towards envy. An excessive ' mound on the little finger, too, indicates sharp practice, disastrous acuteness, dishonourable trickery, and a love of evasion.
