ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

WELLINGTON SWIFTS V. HAVELOCK

(Contributed!.

An eleven from the Swifts Club, the champion Club of the Empire City, and one of the foremost Clubs in the dominion, visited Havelock on Saturday and defeated the local team by four goals to one, after a moat enjoyable game. The visitors were not at full strength* two of the best forwards having remained behind at Blenheim, while two more of the team stood out for two Blenheim players to take part. From a football point of view the game could hardly be called a first-class exhibition of soccer, but to the spectators, many of whom had probably never seen the real football before, it must have been decidedly humorous, especially when the players headed the ball, which is of course a prominent feature of a soccer match.

The late arrival and a rather heavy lunch at Okaramio did not improve the visitors’ play. However, a most friendly game was started, and it was not long before Roberts scored for Swifts. No further score took place in the first spell, but the second half was not long in awing before Havelock equalised amidst much cheering. The visitors bucked up somewhat after this, and were not long in adding three goals, Roberts being responsible for two and Pye-Smith lor the other. There being no further score, Swifts won by 4 goals to 1. Mr Tuton was referee.

The home team contained some very likely players, and with practice they would have given the visitors a shake-up. rTbe defence was good at times, that of Reid especially so. It was a pity that Roberts was hurt at Blenheim the previous day, as he is a first-class player and would have displayed all the finer points. As it was, he showed how to score goals. Guise, for the visitors, was the best player on the field, while Wilby also did well. E, Smith scored for Havelock.

The team stayed in Havelock, overnight and went down to Homewood for dinner next day. Thence they proceeded to Portage, and on toPicton, where they played a local team on Monday,' being beaten by 3 goals to 2.
