A Back-blocks Tragedy.

THE PENALTY OF PIONEERING Auckland, Last Night. A sai tragedy is reported from TaumarUnui. Mr and MrsErner, settlers, of Swiss nationality, reside in the Mangaohutu Yailey, about thirty miles down the Wanganui River, and a week ago one of their five children sickened with diphtheria and died while they were taldng him to Taumarunui. The child was buried at that plac*, and when the parents returned home they found two other children ill. Mounting their horses, each parent took a child and rode twenty-eight miles, over very rough country, to Raurimu, whence the children were taken by train to the Taumarunui Hospital. One of the children, a boy, succumbed, but the other has a chance of recovery.
