AT A PRIMROSE LEAGUE DEMONSTRATION.
A great political demonstration in a nobleman’s park was- once robbed of its peaches by a ludicrous incident, A steam merry-go-round had been hired from a showman for the day, and it was resolved to start it with eclat. Accordingly the candidate and his host took up places on the roundabout, and behind them were ranged all the local magnates, a venerable and imposing array.
The'roundabout was set going with great ceremony, and for a round or two the occupants quite enjoyed the unaccustomed sensation, but when it continued revolving with great spirit, in spite of shouts to stop, the position began to look serious. The man in charge of the machine did his best, but he could make no impression on the roundabout, which romped away, with chairmen of Quarter Sessions sitting . speechless with indignation in its toy carriages, and parsons and retired generals clinging round the necks of their hobby horses in unromantic attitudes. An urgent message to the showman secured the presence of that worthy, but not until they had been kept moving for an hour and a half was the circular career of the local notables brought to an end. The speeches were all knocked out of them; but the rustics thought that a small matter. They wouldn’t have missed seeing that roundabout ride for all the speeches in creation.
