NOTES. A further contribution to the Guardian fund for the purchase of championship caps is to hand from Mr Med wood. Mr Reade (Secretary of the meeting of football, delegates who decided to form a sub-Union in this district) has received a replyfrom the New Zealand Rugby Union, and has written to the Nelson Union asking them to constitute the three district Clubs a subUnion. On receipt of a reply from Nelson a general meeting of those interested will be held. At a meeting of the local Club, held bn Tuesday evening, the Secretary read a challenge from the Central (Blenheim) Club to play a match at Havelock on Monday, 3rd June. After some discussion, it was resolved that the challenge be accepted conditionally on the Centrals sending a junior team. With reference to future fixtures for the championship, it was decided that the Rai and Gaimstown Clubs he asked if they are agreeable to the proposal made at a meeting of the Havelock Club on 25th inst.—namely, that the Captains of the three Clubs meet and arrange the fixtures and that three independent men be appointed y to decide any matter not requiring reference to the Union. Mr Morris was appointed Vice-Captain of the Club. Tbe following men have been selected to represent South in the match against the North Island, to be played at Christchurch on Monday next:-Backs, Turthill, Booth, Eckhold, Dousey (Otago), Deans, Fryer, Burnes (Canterbury) ; forwards, Hughes, Clark (Southland), Oassey, Paton, McDonald, Johnston (Otago), Carlton (South Canterbury), Wade and Dennehy (Westland), The Southern selectors will decide which man shall retire. The North team leave for Christchurch on Friday or Saturday. Dennehy, who is chosen as an emergency player in the North v. South Island football match, is a member of the Westport Club, who are affiliated to the Duller Rugby Union. The latter Union are in the Nelson Province, and not in Westland. It is a matter of constant complaint that Westport and the Westport collerles are treated in the Press Association telegrams as being in Westland, instead of, as they are, in the Nelson Province.
The % Duller Union strongly protest against Dennehy being selected as only an emergency man. The Auckland Rugby Union have accepted the Duller Union’s challenge to play for the Ranfurly Shield, and the match will take place on 18th July, at Auckland.
The Marlborough-Duller match for the Seddon Shield will be played at Blenheim on 20th July. It is hoped that the officials of the “ Marlborough ” Rugby Union will prove true to their name when selecting the “ rep,” team, and will make them thoroughly representative of the whole Province. Otherwise a combined team from this end of the world might find it necessary to visit Blenheim and give the “ rep.” team a drubbing.
