WHY HE SUSPECTED HIM.
Not long ago a man was charged with shooting a number of pigeons belonging to a neighbour. A policeman was told to keep a look-out for the delinquent. One evening ho heard a shot, and caught a man running away. The solicitor for the defence endeavoured to frighten the policeman.
“Now,” he remarked, “are you prepared to swear that it was the prisoner who shot the pigeons '?“ “I didn’t say he did shoot them ; I said I suspected him of doin’ so." “But what made you suspect an innocent man? ” chuckled the lawyer. “Well, sir, firstly, I catched Mm on t’ premises wiv’ a gun ; then I heard t’ gun go orf, an’ saw sum" pigeons drop ; then 1 seized hold of t ’ man an’ found four pigeons in Ms pocket, an’ I don’t think as them birds flew there an’ committed sooicidc.”
