Dutch, Victoria Street Wellington. In forwarding a photograph of two Chemical Fire Engines, Mr Dutch writes : THESE machines are specially necessary in districts having no waterservice, and are rapidly coming into general use. They are perfectly simple to work, and can be used by a woman as well as by a man. The machine is kept oons'antly full of water with the charge of soda mixed in it, and the charge of acid is contained in a lead bottle suspended inside the cylinder When the machine is required, all that is necessary when it is run into position is to turn the email wheel on top of cover, which releases the bottle, allowing it to capsize the acid into the water and soda. Instantly a pressure of 1201 b is generated and the chemical ready for use 0y spraying, similar to. using ordinary garden-hose. The charge will last from twelve to fifteen minutes, and only costs about 2s 6d, so the working expense is almost nothing. No. 1 machine in photo, represents a single-cylinder, 80-gallon capacity, and No. 2 a double-cylinder each 20-gallon capacity. No. 2 machine has the advantage of giving a second charge available instantly, if necessary, and allowing the first cylinder to be re filled whilst using the second. Each machine carries a separate charge of acid and soda for each cylinder, I have ust made, and delivered two of these Chemical Fire Engines, each of 40-gallon capacity single cylinders, to the Wellington 0 macil, for use on the high levels; and the Harbour Board are having two similar machines for use at the wharf suede. After a practical test at the New Plymouth Exhibition in January with No. 1 machine, by the local Fire Brigade, the Committee, on the recommendation of the Captain, awarded me a gold medal for this machine. They are a necessity for large buildings such as hotels, warehouses, schools, sawmills, etc. I will be pleased to receive communication from anyone requiring a Chemical Engine, and to send any particulars required.
