CHILDREN AT WORK.
Nearly Two Millions, a Large Per .Cent of Which Are Under tbe Statutory Age, The factories, the mines, the workshops and the great mercantile establishments of our country teem with the labor of children, says W. S. Waudby, in an article on “Child Labor,” in Leslie’s. Some of them are of the age required by the laws of the state, but innumerable thousands are much below the limit these statutory laws provide for, and far, far below the limit which the laws of nature demand. There are few branches of our great industrial life which arc not overcrowded with child labor, I have be mi informed by Mr. William €. Hunt, ehief statistician fur population, that the report of the census office for the year 1900 when issued will show that for ihe mainland of the United States, excluding Alaska and Hawaii, there were approximately, 1,750,000 persons from 10 to 15 years of age, inclusive, reported as engaged in gainful occupations.
