The Passing of the Maori.
Wellington, January 31, Dr. Pomare, Native Health Officer, referring to the effect of civilisation on ihe Maori race, states that it is only a question of time when the whole Maori race will disappear, as they become associated with the pakeha. For example, he says, take the South Island : nearly all the Maoris there now are halfcastes. Fully 7<i per cent, of the Maoris in the South Island, if not more, have European blood in them. There is the same tale to tell in the Noith Wand. The old stock is gradually dying off, and even now the majority of ihe young stock has European blood in it. Within thirty years there will not be a pure-blooded Maori in the whole of New Zealand. In the King Country 40 per cent, of the Natives are half cases; in the Urewera one finds less half-castes than elsewhere, but it is there that one also sees the poorest class of N dives, many of the old sock still preferring to live in their primitive condition.
