Accident to a Steamer.

Hokitika, April 23. An accident occurred to the s.s. Torganten yesterday afternoon. When she was just clearing the bar she shipped a heavy sea, which washed a small hawser overboard and fouled the propeller. This brought the engines to a standstill. The vessel then drifted about a quarter of a mile north of the bar, and although the anchors were dropped, the vessel gradually set in toward the beach. At low water she was hard aground. Later. The Torganten's position was altered but little by last night’s tide. No cargo is yet discharged, A tangled rope round the propeller was the cause of the vessel going ashore. It was cut away at low water when the vessel was almost high and dry. The ship suffered no injury. A good deal of water was taken-aboard from seas at last tide.
