Sydney, April 25. A sensation .1 t-agedy occurred a ■Leichardt. a suburb of S dney. Aieud involving legal proceedings had existed tor considerable time between Alfred Russell a plumber, and Steward, a local builder and

an alderman of the borough, over a house Steward was building for Russell. Yesterday evening Russell awaited Steward’s return from the city, and, walking within a few paces of him, shot him dead, in the presence of several passers-by. He then quietly walked away. When arrested a large steel plate was found across his breast. He explained that this precaution was taken as he feared Steward would shoot him. In consequence of Russell’s threats Steward was always armed. His dead hand grasped a fully-loaded revolver partly withdrawn from a pocket.
