Rifle Shooting.

CANVASTOWN v. SOUNDS.

The third match between these Clubs took place at Waitaria Bay on , Saturday. The first match, at Manaroa, was won by Sounds, the second, at Canvastown, was a victory for Canvastown, and the one on Saturday gave the Canvastown men the “ rubber.” The visiting team left the Havelock wharf at 6.45 a.m., in the Reikura, and, although a strong head-tide was running, a good trip was made, and Waitaria was reached at 10 a.m. The visitors were there met by Captain Masefield and Mr R. Harvey, and, although the members of the home team were not particularly punctual, a start with shooting was made a little before 11 a.m. The match was a very close one, the result really depending on the shooting of the last squad at 500 yards; but the three Canvastown members (T. Fuller, C. Smart and E. Wells) here shot particularly well and the match ended in a victory for Canvastown by 27 points. The marking at 200 and 800 yards was very smart and correct, but owing to the poor target at 500 yards the marking was very slow and rather uncertain. An excellent lunch and tea were prepared and partaken of, and the hospitality of the Sounds Club, combined with the glorious weather, made the outing most enjoyable. Captain Wilson suitably thanked the home team for the pleasureableness of the match, and expressed the hope that a return match would soon eventuate; he then called for three cheers for Captain Masefield and his men and three more for the ladies. Both teams were then photographed, after which a start was made for Havelock, which was reached ab r 'ut nine o’clock. Following are the scores (seven shots were fired at each range):—
