A well-known humorist is decidedly a plain-looking man, and is quite aware of the fact. Some yeaisago he found to his deiighi th;it at least one individual was capable of detecting some vestige of beauty in him. This was his little daughter. But even her admiration was destined to be the cause of a freah indignity.

Mr. W. H, Gilbert chanced to call one daj, and during hia visit the littlo girl earne into the room. Hovering round her father, she shyly offered endearments, and finally cooed softly : •' Nice papa, pretty papa !" Mr. Gilbert grinned, and then asked, nther cruelly : " 1 say, my friend, are you trying to make a humorist of that child ?"
