Wellington, Last Nighi. The sad nows was received hero lade last night of the death, by a trap accident, of Mrs Elizabeth Williams, eldest sister of the Hon. J. Carroll. Mr Carroll left at a few minutes’ notice by special train for Napier, on * bis way to Wairoa to attend the funeral. A Christchurch telegram says that heavy south-west rain set in on Saturday, and continues; if it deal's up soon it will not do much damage to crops, but will delay the cut harvest, which is now in full swing. A good deal of rain has also fallen in Otago during the past few days. The sum of £‘28,481 was put. through the totalisator on the two days of the Wellington llacing Club’s Bummer Meeting as against £26,881 in three dass last year. The Hon. Mr Mills returned to Wellington on Saturday evening. Though the weather was bad during most of the time he was in the Ear North he travelled many miles by road, making himself acquainted with the requirements of that pari of the colony.
