Captain W. Jackson Barry attained his 84th birthday on Sunday, .he having been born at Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, on 18th January, 1819* a few months before the birth of her late Majesty ■ Queen Victoria. He left home as a boy of ten with Sir John Alcock, in the ship Rover, on 28th June, 1828, arriving in Sydney early in 1829. His life and adventures are* fully told in his book on the Australasian Colonies, which is now in the press, and will shortly be published. ' ; Captain Allman (of the Manaroa), Mi* Frank Clennel (engineer of the same vessel) and Mr H. L; Moffatt (wharfinger at Motueka) have applied for letters patent for an appliance for automatically signalling the' state of the tide at bar and other harbours. Mr Smith, of Kenepuru, was in Havelock yesterday, and looks vigorous ' and active. The old gentleman claims to have been born on 15fch February, 1804, when Napoleon Was Consul of France, so that next month he will be 99 years of age.
