Sunday Trading.

Westport, January 10

The licensee of the Coalbrookdale Hotel was yesterday fined £5 53 for selling liquor on Sunday, and £1 for unlawfully opening his licensed premises the sarn.; day. The question of distance was raised, the person who had the drink claiming to be a’ bonafide traveller within the meaning of the Act, but a survey made showed the distance from the Denniston Hotel, where (he "traveller” had stayed die previous night, to the Coalbrookdale Hotel to be two miles forty-nine chains.

Dunedin, January 10,

Mr Graham, S.M,. took time to consider his decision in a case heard to-day—a charge of selling liquor on Sunday - against the landlady of the Hotel Metropole at St. Clair. Two men wlio said they were travellers entered and obtained drink but it was shown that they slept in a part of the city under the three-mile limit. The ''"idence of the man at the door was to the direct that he was specially stationed there to ask the question as to persons being travellers, and having slept on the previous night outside the three-mile limit. Though he could not remember the men in question going in, he was sure he must have questioned them, as he never allowed anyone in until satisfied they were travellers, The barmaid ■■.lso said she questioned all persons, The men said they were travellers, but could not remember being asked where they slept. The case is important, because if a conviction takes place and the license is endorsed the hotel will lose its license.
