LONDON MARKETS

The following cable has been received from the Agent-General, by the Department of Agriculture, dated London, 29th ult; —

“ Nominally all brands of New Zealand mutton are of equal value—4-Jd ; the market is firm, but the demand is only moderate ; higher prices are at present greatly affected by reports of small shipments; the general impression is that Now Zealand is unable to furnish supplies sufficient to establish a trade for some time. The lamb market is slightly weaker with less demand. The beef market is quiet; little is doing, but a good feeling prevails. The Paparoa’s butter arrived in good condition ; the market is steady with moderate demands ; the price of butter to-day is 112 s to Ills. There is a dull price for New Zealand hemp; “ Good Fair Wellington ” grade on spot to-day per ton is £32; January-February shipments, “ Good Fair Wellington ” grade is £27 10s; Manila hemp on spot to-day, fair current grade, is £3B. The wool market is alive at higher prices ; the crossbred market has advanced Id since the opening.” TIMARU WOOL SALES. Timaru, December 8. The wool sales opened at Timaru this morning. The catalogue comprised 2000 bales. English and Colonial buyers were well represented, and bidding was very spirited. The wool was shown in better condition than for years. All classes were in good demand, and there was a rise all round on good wool of a £d on the late Christchurch sales and 2d on the corresponding sale last year. The highest prices were: Merino, lid; halfbred, lOd ; threequarter bred, 7Jd.
