The Soudan Campaign.
London, September 26. The Times correspondent at Cairo cables that Sir Herbert Kitchener has peacefully garrisoned Fashoda and Sobat. The Cairo authorities are silent regarding the presence of white strangers at Fashoda. There are no Abyssinian troops in the npper Nile region. The Daily Telegraph correspondent says that the Sirdar found the French at Fashoda and notified Captain Marchand that the territory was British and that be must retire. General Kitchener hoisted the British and Egyptian colours, leaving two Soudanese battalions and 100 men of the Gordan Highlanders to protect the Union Jack. The French are awating instructions from Paris, as the question is regarded as one for settlement by diplomacy. Lieutenant Colonel Parsons, Governor of Kassal, has occupied Gaedaref the last Dervish stronghold. About 1,300 Egyptains attacked and defeated 3,000 Dervishes killing 500, including Emir Abdul Fedal, cousin to the Khalifa. No British officers were injured. The Khalifa is fleeing to Taaisba and it is expected that be will be captured. A Nephew of the late General Gordon, who is accompanying the British forces has exploded with a shell the tomb of the Mahdi at Omdurman, and destroyed the Mahdi’s body. Cairo, September 27. The Khedive is having sent to Cairo and Massowab 250 . Abyssinians who released Omdurman after the flight of the Dervishes. Sir H. Kitchener has secured the right bank of the White Nile, and barred north and south of Fashoda. It is reported that Major McDonald’s expedition from the south has reached Tado. The skull of the Mahdi, which was recovered from the tomb when blown up has been forwarded to the London College of Surgeons. Paris. September 27. It is reported that the Government sustains Captain Marchand’s claims to Fashoda, and also claims Bahr-el-ghazal.
