THE PELORUS GUARDIAN, AND MINER’S ADVOCATE. TUESDAY, September 27th., 1898.

Police Commission.— The bound copy of the evidence, &cl, brought before the Police Commission, has been kindly forwarded to this office. Any of our readers wishing to peruse it, can do so by calling on us.

Racing. —The Course Committee of the forthcoming Prince of Wales' Birthday Hack Meeting, after visiting the course, have decided to put it in the best possible going order. An application to run a private match upon the course, after the completion of the published programme, has been received. The Secretary requests that all those requiring gentleman rider’s permits will make early application to him for the necessary declaration forms, to be signed by applicant! Bachelors’ Ball. —At a meeting, held on Saturday evening last, it was decided to hold the Bachelors' Ball on Friday, October 21st. The catering was placed in the hands of Mr W. E. Simmonds, and, by special request of the meeting Mr T. H. Scott kindly consented to act as Treasurer and M.C. Maongatapd. —The interest that has centred round the discovery of the Maungatapu murder relics, at Canvastown, has created a demand for the book, published at the time, containing accounts of the murders and trial. Brisk sales have taken place lately, and there is still enquiry for copies. Deep Creek. —The Social, in aid of the School Picnic Fund, at Deep Creek, on Friday evening last, was, in every way, the success that was on all sides predicted. Owing to inclement weather, many Havelock residents were debarred from attending, but the sociability of those present, and the energy of the promoters, carried the function through with a swing of enjoyment that is the leading factor of Deep Creek assemblages The ladies, if anything, outvied their previous high reputation as refreshment providers, and the welcome extended to all was lavish to a degree. During the evening. Miss Andrews, on behalf of the Committee, - extended thanks to the musicians (Messrs Burke and McDonald), to the M.C. (Mr P. Niven), and to all others who had so generously proffered assistance, and invited all who had supported the Social to be present at the forthcoming picnic, the date of which would be notified. Town Board. Nominations for one vacant seat on the Havelock Town Board, will close with the Returning Officer,- at Mr Erskine’s office, Lucknow street, at noon tomorrow (Wednesday.) Should there be more than one nomination of duly qualified candidates, the election will take place at the office of the Town Board on Monday next, October 3rd. Writing to the Uanawatu Daily Times, a correspondent states that the late Empress of Austria was, before her marriage, the last representative of the unfortunate House of Stuart. She always showed her appreciation for the way the Irish fought for her ancestor, and it was until late years her custom to pay Ireland an annual visit during the hunting season, expending on this recreation £ 40,000 per annum. From the ist October, in lien of the rates at present existing, the commission on money orders for all countries beyond Australasia with which New Zealand has exchanges, will be re-arranged and uniform charges made of -/6 for the first £i, i /- for £2, ij& for £3, and so on, rising by stages of -/6 for each additional £1 or fraction thereof.

A London correspondent writes: —“ Lord Onslow is not quite so popular as a landlord as he was as a viceroy. His notions are con servative, and he has just had a somewhat serious difference with his neighbours anent manorial rights. A meeting was called to settle matters, and bis .ex-Excellency took the chair. Despite, however, an eloquent speech, the lord and landlord found himself hugely out-voted, and had to announce his own defeat and discomfiture.” Mr. George King, of Burwood (Canterbury), has shipped two pair of ostriches to New South Wales, and we understand that other sales will probably be made. This is said to be the first time that ostriches have been exported from this Colony. Mr King has now twenty birds left, and they are commencing their season’s laying. Regarding the practice of sending missionaries to China, it is interesting to note that every celestial converted costs £i, 500. This is expensive when you can get 1,500 in London for the same sum.

Why do men prefer the privations and battling and poverty of a city, when on a farm there is much of plenty, peace, and wealth ? “It is easier, says the carter, to load a cart than to grab a clearing." And so it is; but the bush land once made clear stays cleared, while carts that are laden, empty as fast as laden. The work with the cart waxes harder with the age of the carter. The cultivation of the land grows easier year by year. Which is the most profitable ?

Mr. Skey, the colonial analyst (says a Wellington telegram), is making an analysis of a sample of water taken from a river between Mokihinui and Little Wanganui. The stream is a beautifully dear one, but its water has the effect of making every person who drinks it profoundly drowsy, and in some cases weakness of the limbs has also been felt.

Mr. C. M. Dixon, a well known merchant of Pleasant Ridge, Fulton Co., Pa., has a little girl who is frequently threatened with croup, but when the first symptoms appear, his wife gives her Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy, which always affords prompt relief. For sale by W. Price. Don;t be persuaded into buying liniments without reputation or merit—Chamberlain’s Pain Balm costs no more, and its merits have been proven by a test of many years. Such letters as the following, from L. G, Bagley. Hueneme, Cal., are constantly being received: "The best remedy for pain ever used is Chamberlain's Pain Balm, and I say so after having used it in my family for several years.” It cures rheumatism, lame back, sprains and swellings. For sale by Wat. Foot

Spanish-Ambrican War. This (Tuesday) evening, the public of Havelock will have the opportunity of viewing, for the first time, actual scenes of the late belligerent actions between Spain and America. The scenes will be depicted by a diorama manipulated by Mir Brocklehurst, whose great experience in this class of science is a safeguard that the instrument and views will be shown in a manner that will leave nothing undone to aid in interpreting the life-like scenes of the late war. That such an entertainment will attract a large audience there should be little doubt. During the evening Mr C. Brocklehurst will introduce his marvellous conjuring seance, in which he is said to equal in mystification the renowned Wizard of the North, with this exception, that Mr Brocklebursts' feats of magic are new, and combine amusement with coasternation. Edison's wonderful invention, the graphophone, will be also utilised with the newest of records, in presenting an entertainment that is highly interesting, instructive, and humourous. The Company will visit Canvastown on Wednesday, and Cullens'dlle on Thursday evening. For Sale. —ln another column a gent’s. N.Z. Humber bicycle (with full extras) is advertised for sale.

While everyone deplores personalties and the use of expressions likely to be offensive, it is seldom they are noticed except for party or political purposes, and the most generous men are those who seldom take notice of personal affronts. —Exchange. An interesting antiquarian discovery has been made in the small church of Radanita, in the Bucovine. It consists of a rich tapestry embroidered in gold representing the death of Ohrist. It is in a wonderful state of preseryation, and the inscription is perfectly legible. It states that " this tapestry was the gift of Alexander the Good, Prince of Moldavia, who, in 1409, built the church at his own expense.”

How to prevent Pneumonia. —At this time of the year a cold is very easily contracted, and if left to run its course without the aid of some reliable cou t h medicine is liable to result in the dread disease, pneumonia. We know of no better remedy to cure a cough or cold than Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy. We have used it quite extensively and it has always given entire satisfaction.—Olagah, Ind. Ter. Chief. This is the only remedy that is known to be a certain preventive of pneumonia. Among the many thousands who have used it for colds and la grippe, we have never yet learned of a single case having resulted in pneumonia. Persons who have weak lungs or have reason to fear an attack of pneumonia, should keep the remedy at hand. For sale by Wm. Price. ’ After bearing some friends continually praising Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, Curtis Fleck, of Anaheim, California, purchased a bottle of.it for his own use and is now as enthusiastic over its wonderful work as anyone can be For sale by W. Price.
