MINING NEWS.
It is stated that three members of a well-known Auckland business firm have made £IO,OOO out of share transactions since the present raining boom began. The Hokitika evening paper states that Harcourt’s drainage shaft at the Blue Spur was bottomed on Friday night, and from four barrow loads of dirt 7dwts of gold was obtained.
The Premier of South Australia has signified his readiness to co-operate with New Zealand to abolish the cyanide patent. The late Hon. G. C. Hawker, of Adelaide, is said to have made £460,000 out of Broken Hill Proprietary shares.
It is reported that a settler while fossicking in the back of Te Roti, near Normanby, found signs of gold, picking up one nugget of an ounce weight. A contemporary says if gold is found in Taranaki, it will prove another “ freak of nature.
The following are the Eecfton mining returns for the last week; —Big River, 168ozs amalgam from 120 tons stone; Hercules, 107ozs from 86 tons; Keep-it-Dark, 91ozs from 61 tons (from low level); Progress, 184ozs from 215 tons (all top plates only); Cumberland, 2320zs from 110 tons (general clean up). The Cocksparrow dredge obtained 38ozs amalgam for 183 hours’ dredging; Buller dredge, 85ozs gold for 112 hours’ work. A Perth cablegram says:—“The Londonderry mine is down ten feet, and the rich shoot still continues. The last three feet show enormously rich stone. Showers of rain fell nearly every day last week.’’
