Sir Robert Stout.
In another part of the paper we publish the written address of Sir Robert Stout, to the electors of Inangahua, or we should say, to the people of New Zealand. It is seldom that so much good common-sense and wisdom is put into so short a space as is contained in his address, and Sir Robert will be deserving of the lasting gratitude of New Zealand, if he will lend his acknowledged ability to perfect the details in connection with the foundation he has laid down for guidance. In the matter of local government, which is one of the most difficult problems to be solved in the near future, his assistance will be invaluable. His advice in regard to care being taken in dealing with the finances of the colony, should not be forgotten; for everything depends on how far we are successful in that direction. Of course, it is for the electors of Inangahua to decide whether New Zealand is to have the services in Parliament of Sir Robert Stout, and if they look at the matter in the light that they are discharging a duty to the whole colony, there can be no doubt he will be elected by a large majority. It is seldom that the electors of a single electorate at a byelection are placed in such a position, for they are practically representing New Zealand in the matter, and the colony looks to them for a wise and just decision in choosing between Sir Robert Stout and Mr O’Regan.
