The Symes Case.
Woodville, November 25. In the Symes case the Court sat till marly 11.30 last night. The evidence of Dr Reed being taken up to the time of adjournment. In reply to Mr Baker the witnesses said that such an operation as alleged to have been performed would probably unhinge the woman’s mind, but on recovery would not in the least affect -her # memory as to what occurred before. On the Court resuming this morning Mu Edwards addressed the bench'for an hour, urging that the case should be dismissed on the grounds that there was not sufficient evidence on which a Judge could direct a jury to commit. The case had been fully investigated by .the police and the Justiee Department and they considered that there was no charge to be laid against the accused who had treated the woman in the ordinary course of his medical practice. He urged that the information laid by Dr Davenport was really substituted bv Mr Hoggen in revenge for the punishment which he had suffered for the recent libel, and that the informant was a prejudiced witness. His Worship said that he had decided to commit the accused, who said that the charge was absolutely baseless, and he reserved his defence. By ms was then committed for trial at the Supreme Court sittings at 'SWlington on Monday. Bail was himself in £IOO, and two securities of £SO each.
