Onamalutu.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) When I sent my last budget of news we were on the eve of the general election.' This crucial test of the market value of the different candidates has now been applied, and the expectant ones have been put out of their suspense in opposite directions. Havelock is to be congratulated on the success achieved by its chosen candidate. No doubt the little town is jubilant, even though its glory be only a reflection of that of its enterprising inhabitants. Now that he has a nest in the great political hen-house it is to be hoped he will mind the hatching well, and not allow the eggs to be addled. At Onamalufcu the election day was as uneventful as if the electors had assembled to conduct a respectable funeral.

Our Band of, Hope had a very good meeting, presided over by Mr Jordan, and since then we have had a visit

■from Mr Knott, who delivered one of the late J. B. Gough’s lectures. The attendance was. not quite as large as might perhaps have been expected, but those who were present certainly were amply recompensed for their attendance, and the results in another sense were satisfactory, as four persons joined the ranks of the total abstainers.

Now that the time of festivity is approaching Mrs Partington desires me to transmit to you and all your readers the compliments of the season, not forgetting her good friend Mrs Grundy, who, it is hoped, will have a Happy Christmas amidst a plentitude of mince pies.
