THE PELORUS GUARDIAN TUESDAY, DECEMBER, 23, 1890. Christmas.

Thebe is a certain charm about the wore! Christmas, which makes it endearing to millions of people scattered over the face of the earth ; it is a time when “Peace on Earth and goodwill towards men ” is exhibited by young and old more than at any other period of the year, when the mother, perhaps, seeks to forgive an offending daughter, when the stoncy heart of a father melts towards his erring son. At Christmas time those who have plenty open their hearts and loose their purse strings, and freely realise the happiness in carrying out the injunction that it is better to give than to receive, and make others happy by their generous acts of kindness. In England, where the weather is cold, and there are so many thousands of poor people, all the noblest qualities of the human heart are brought into full play b' the distribution of gifts of fuel and warm clothing, and the man who has plenty and to spare must have a very miserable time if he allows the opportunity to pass without doing some little act of kindness by trying to make others happy. Whatever may be the religious belief of many -whether believers or unbelievers—they are actuated with the same feelings, and we have cause to be thankful for the birth of One whose name has endured for nearly nineteen hundred years, and which has been the foundation of all the generous acts which has enobled the whole Christian world. If an artist could only draw on canvas a picture which would be realistic of the good deeds performed at this time of the year he would certainly achieve a success unprecedented in the world’s history, and such a picture would be a standing example to urge future generations to continue to excel in lofty destinies and noble deeds, not only at Christmas time, but all the year round. Such a picture would represent the fortunate extending a helping hand to the unfortunate, the long-parted friends meeting together, one forgiving the other, the meeting of parents and children after perhaps years of separation, happiness reigning supreme on all sides, and what other pleasing scenes the imagination may conjure up. At this time, too, the cares of business are thrown on one side, and all seek to enjoy themselves in the way which is calculated to give them the greatest pleasure, and which very often gives them renewed life and vigor with which to commence the New Year, All work and no play makes dull boys, and wo think men and women also. Amusement, for its own sake, and without any ulterior object, has both physically and morally a beneficial effect on the human constitution, for a good laugh periodically administered would save the consumption of a large amount of medicine. We are told also that if a man laughed more he would sin less, and would likewise grow fat. so wc can only hope that the opportunity will be afforded every one to enjoy a jolly good hearty laugh, as the mirthful faculties require gratification as much as any other with which humanity is endowed. ’ There was a time, wc are told, when Tho Cbvi.stimis gambol oft would cheer The poor maii’n lioart thro’ halt the year I and wo can only hope that our readers may find sufficient in the approaching festive season to cheer them through tho whole of the year. Such is our sincere wish, and that our friends and subscribers may have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
