A Sculling Co ntest.
Defeat of Kemp. M'Lean willing to meet Kemp Again. Sydney, December 15. The sculling race between Kemp and M'Lean for £2OO a-side was rowed on the Paramatta River this afternoon. The letting at the start was G'io'4 oii M'Lean. A splendid start was effected, 'and for a mile there was little difference between the two. M'Lean then ■ got into Kemp's water, and his sculls touched the latfcer's boat, whereupon the champion stopped rowing for a couple cf strokes, and claimed a foul, this lost him half a length, but he spurM and
recovered a slight lead. A ding dong race ensued, both men rowing neck and neck. Two to one was laid on Kemp, but at last M'Lean spurted and got a slight advantage, and the betting veered round. Kemp made several efforts to get up but dropped constantly astern till M'Lean had a lead of eight lengths; still the champion did not give up, and in the last mile reduced his lead somewhat, M'Lean eventually winning by six lengths. Time, 22mm. 13sec. The foul was decided in M'Lean's favour. Both men rowed magnificently throughout. December 16. Kemp being dissatisfied with yesterday's race, M'Lean states he is willing- to row him or Sfcansbury for £SOO a-side, any time after April.
