Notes From Nelson.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ! Very Sad. this morning a 'rumour gained currency that Jatk Webster, a young fellow: well known in athletic circles, had taken bis life. About 4 a.m. deceased left the'house, and some time having elapsed without his reappearance search ■yran made, While the searchers were

j at work IViss Webster, who had been to his room, ran out with a scrap of paper on which was wri'ten, "When this is found T shall be no more." The search was now proceeded with, and some of the patty decided on visiting an unoccupiod house close by, but just at this stage the report of a fire-arm was heard in it. Upon reaching the spot he was found, shot through the heart. Some twelve-month ago deceased received a very severe knock on the head, and has at various times Bince experienced fits of depression, while suffering from one of which, it is supposed, this sad affair happened. Jack Webster was a great favourite witli everyone, and much sympathy is felt for.hi» family in their great trouble. Boy Missing. Last Saturday afternoon, while a number of boya were bathing in a pond made for the purpose at the Stoke < )rpbanage, one of the number named , John Rogers, an orphan, was observed to. run away up the hill in a nude con- • dition. The explanation which the other bathers gave for this strange conduct on the part of Rogers, was that he was frightened of being ducked, and in order to escape it. made a bolt. Other boys were at once dspatched to i bring the runaway back, but he was not to be found. Search parties were thereupon formed, and though they worked all the afternoon and night, and again Sunday, no trace of the missing one has yet been found. Saturday night was a dreadfully cold bleak one with a hard driving rain, so that unless the boy found shelter it is very improbable that he will be found alive. In connection with the above we hear that the brother who went out in search died from exhaustion, a>jd that the boy referred to has not r,een found. This is one of the most str a nge and sad occurrences we have to record for some time. October 27th, 1890.
