Since my last report was sent little worthy of not'ice has occurred in our valley. At present we are nearly as quiet as the dead calf that 1 noticed in your town when 1 1 paid rny last visit. Mrs Partington was very indignant when she found jou had omitted all mention of the delicate compliment paid your town in my last report. She declares that the Editor is totally 'incompetent to appreciate '• high-class humour",when it is spent on Havelock, and that .your; motto seems to be '■"! You may hit''Jack!, but don't hit me." However, Mrs Grurkly >has told her to take no notice of the matter, and the old lady's ruffled feathers are now nearly down at' their-usual level,- and the broom-stick hag' been put back in the' corner. /
. The aspect of the valley has' uhder!gone considerable change in a short time; The warm' weather has been supplemented 1 by steady rains; and the country.has every, prospect.of plentiful crops.-. .-, ,■;';.. ....■':.,,. ~■ , ; .. •■
;We expect before long a little excitement'over, the running,of three live candidates for the House—the ,old hprse and the- two young.colts. We think, one of the-colts' would be put in better trim. for. running by a little training.in.bu'sh work.. ..-- The timber'trade is very slack, and I have nothing tiew to report in mining matters, but, it is possible that the present slackness may induce a number of the inhabitants to .turn their attention to prospecting. Our flax-mill on the other Hand seems to be in full swing, and is'turhing out a considerable quantity of material.
; Our school seems to be getting on viery nicely, with a fair -number of pupils on the roll. A very .successful Band of Hope meeting, -presided over by Mr Jordan, of Okaramio/was held in the school-room: on Saturday evening, the 11th inst., and oh the following day an able sermon-''was preached by Mr Ensor, senior.'/ ' •-'' " " Now, Mr Editor, /you are on your good behaviour, and' - 1 shall look for an unabridged" report/'in an early issue. Mrs G-ruiidy id expected io pay Mrs Partington a visit shortly, and an hour at the tea l t'able may-bring out a little more news'. /
