New Zealand Exports.
A return has recently been compiled 1 by the New Zealand Shipping Company showing the cargoes carried by ships from New Zealand to Europe during the year ended 30th June last, and interesting as this return is (says the Colonist,) it is rendered doubly so when compared with the similar publication of last year. All along the line progress is shown, and the figures given are astonishing when one remembers that direct steam communication was so recently established, and that only in two or. three centres has the work of colonization proceeded for 50 years, several of the largest exporting localities having many years to wait before they ean celebrate their jubilee. Last year no less than 46 steamers left the colony for Europe, nearly one a week on the average, but in addition to these 151 sailing vessels departed for European ports, or nearly three a week. In the previous year 37 steamers and 120 ships left for Europe, so that last year 9 more steamers and 31 more sailing ships carried New Zealand produce to the markets of the old word. It may be mentioned here that the New Zealand Shipping Co. alone despatched last year 16 steamers, three more than in the previous year, and 69 sailing vessels, an increase of 21. Of the tonnage of the vessels despatched last year the total was 276,995, the steamers aggregating 118,280, and the sailing ships 158,715, as against 214,070 tons in 1889, the steamers representing 98,095, and the sailing ships 115,975, and there was thus an increase in tonnage of 62,925, or of more than 25 per cent. This should be sufficient to prove that when facilities are offered trade increases accordingly.
