Reefton Gold Returns.
A Choir on Strike.

At New Plymouth the murder case is still proceeding. The evidence is all. of a preliminary character, and the same as at the inquest.. Nothing new has been elicited at the , trial. Witnesses have been examined.
The Reefton gold returns for the week are Progress, 2600 z amalgam for the week; Keep-it-Dark, 1750 z amalgam from 136 tons'; Globe,l64oz amalgam from 177 tons; Sir Charles Russell, 360 z amalgam from 6 tons (trial crushing, being retorted gold); Inkerman, 1390 z amalgam from 120 tons ~ Fiery Gross, 4690 z amalgam from-120 .tons up);; Inglewood 82oz retorted gold from 176 tons (clean up); Wealth of Nations, 1250 z amalgam from 140 tons.
The Minister for Lands arrived in Wellington by the R.M.S. Arawa from Lyttelton last evening. Sir Robert Stout and the Hon. E. Richardson being passengers by the same vessel. It is expected that the Minister for Education will return to Wellington to-morrow.
The s.s. Kanieri, with the Wellington and southern portion of the ’Frisco mail, arrived in port at six o’clock this morning. The Nelson and West Coast portion will be taken on by the s.s. Grafton to-morrow.
The conflagration which occurred at the old Government printing office is to form the subject of a Coroner’s enquiry on Friday. • . Much dissatisfaction exists amongst a certain section of St. Paul’s parishioners owing to the attitude of the bishops towards Canon Howell As : a protest against the position assumed by the Bishop in the matter the c 1 undid not attend church yesterday, and, in fact, are on strike!
WESTPORT, October 13. .. News from Denniston is to" the effect that now men aire proceeding with their work' quietly. Mr Brown, mine mapager, is satisfied with the quality of the work done, the bins will be filled with coal, a quantity will ’be stowed along the road,- and a chain fitted, and by that time a fortnight •from date it is expected that the lowering machinery on the incline will again be in full working order. Three shifts are employed at the work of constructing the new drum, and in the meantime the old'drum has been temporarily repaired to enable the material and provisions to be sent no hill.
In accordance with direct orders from the Emperor William, the child, ren of all workmen employed in Government factories have been examined by doctors, and those in a weak condition, or suffering from illness, have been sent for a holiday to seaside resorts, the Government paying all expenses. Thousands of poor children will thus, enjoy for the first time in their lives a beneficial change.
