Ecclesiastical.

A largely attended Prayer Meeting, arranged by his Lordship'the" Bishop, was held in the Cathedral on Tuesday, 3rd inst., the pbjeat being to have an united meeting regarding the labour question. Besides the several clergy of the. Church of England, the Revds. F. W. Isitt (Wesleyan), and P. Calder (Presbyterian), took part in the service. On Sunday, last,; 6th inst., at the Wesleyan Church, the Rev. F. W. Isitt,,' delivered a sermon on the present crisis. He id president of the Nelson Labour Union, and a strong supporter of Unionism, but in his se?m.Qn he, severely criticised the P re , s 9 n t actions of the Unionists, arid utterly condemned the system of boycotting. At the Presbyterian Church, the Rev. P. Caulder also delivered a powerful sermon on the labour question, and was listened to with marked attention by the congregation. At ; the- Baptist Ohuroh v the Rev. Thomas, Spurgeon, who arrived from Wellington via Blenheim on Saturday, conducted the services. He i« a very able speaker, and is commissioned by the Baptist Union of New Zealand to hold missions throughput the Colony in connection,with the Baptist Church.

Mqre. titan ordinary interest was taken in the election of three councillors for this city, which took place: oil Thursday* 11thiiist. -The successful candidates were,Messrs Geo. M>. Bout, W. Akersten, and M, M. Webster. They are all men of considerable ability, and under their able supervision the city is sure to remain in its present satisfactory state. Besides the three citizens elested there were four other candidates nominated viz., Messrs I. Johns, I. H. ■ Stringer,;A.< H. Bisley, and G. Marshall, ■■ " :'.

The Midland Railway.

Those interested may now view |the plans and specifications of the Belgrove section of this railway at the Public , Works Office.
