0 The ’Frisco Mail. t ■ —- 3 Parliamentary News. t'. ' . b The Golden Spur G.M. Co. 5 [By Telegeaph.] |1 (From Our Own Correspondent.) ; WELLINGTON, August 18. 1 The Wanaka, with the ’Frisco mail arrived here about 4 o’clock, and th< , Waihi leaves with the Marlborough portion about midnight. There sterns little chance of the ’Frisco mail subsidity being continued after November, when the present contract expires. Mr Creighton, Government agent at ’Frisco, has cabled to the Postmaster-General that the Tonnage Subsidy Bill has not passed Congress, but that the United States Government . will pay a subsidy of 60,000 dollars 1 (£12,000) if New Zealand will carry on the service for twelve months. Ministers, however, do not see their way to continue the service under such conditions. The Post says that a coming libel action is about to be instituted by Mr H. D. Bell, Crown Prosecutor in this city, against the Otago Workman newspaper, published andcirculated at Duued.n, in respect of some strictures on himself contained in an article of the 26th July, relating to Judge Edwards’ appointment, An arrangement has been come to between the Government and the Opposition for bringing the session to an early close. The Opposition will offer no more obstruction to the despatch of business, and in return Government have agreed to accept supplies up to 31st March, and to call tne new Parliament together on the 9th of April, The labour bills are to be pushed through before the session closes, but the Supreme Court Bill will be abandoned, and the question of the legality of Judge Edwards’ appointment will be left for the new Parliament to deal with.

A. new Bill to facilitate the formation of the new electoral rolls so as to hasten the elections is to be introduced and passed. Ministers have also undertaking to observe the usual constitutional practice of resigning at once, without wailing for Parliament to meet, if the results of the general election is against them. The session will now be brought to a close in about three weeks, and there is some probability of the elections taking place before Christmas. The first half-yearly report of the Golden Spur Gold-mining Company of Wakamarina, to be presented to the meeting of shareholders to-night is as follows :—Your directors have very little to report, as the position of the main tunnel, has not yet been decided on. The old tunnel on the lease has been cleaned out for a considerable distance, but was not considered sufficiently secure to continue operations The amount expended on labour, as shown by the balance-sheet has been £lB 4s. Your directors have had the lease re-surveyed, some trenching done, and substantial pegs put in on the boundaries. It is the intention of your directors to have a sits selected for a new tunnel, and when it is decided on operations will shortly afterwards be commenced. It is satisfactory to know that the richest stone yet taken ont of the Golden Bar reef has when driving towards opr lease, and it is also satisfactory to know that I he opinion of mining experts is favourable to the prospects of the mine. The shareholders may rest satisfied that as few calls as possible will be made, and until operations are decided on none will be required. The balance-sheet shows the total receipts to have been £25 ifis (to calls to date), and expenditure £lB 4s, the assets show a surplus of £17,940 17s 2d over liabilities.
