i A Strike Averted. Attitude of the Shearers’ Union. Dunedin Typographical Society. qmusxommqH, August 16. There was a general feeling of relief here at Mr Millar’s announcement that there will be no strike over Whitcombe and Tombs. Impartial people express the opinion that the Maritime Council hare acted comrmmdably in declining to involve the whole Colony in a struggle. Whitcombe’s supporters say they have gained a victory. SYDNEY, August 16. Mr Spence, President of the Shearers’ Union, states that 233 labour societies are supporting the shearers in the present dispute. ‘ The Shearers’ Union is calling in this year’s as well as next year’s subscriptions from it’s members, to provide the necessary funds for the impending struggle. DUNEDIN, August 16. At a meeting of the Dunedin Typographical Association a letter was received from Mr Millar, asking the members to endeavour to the beat of their ability to prevent the use of Whitcomb® and Tombs’ publications in the schools. The report from the Committee appointed to interview the printer in the city stated that they had made favourable arrangements re apprentices and girl labour. WELLINGTON, August 15. With reference to a telegram from Dunedin that the Australian Marine Officers Association calh-d out thenofficers yesterdav, but numbers refused to strike, the Post says:—A similar cable message has, we learn, been received in Wellington. This strike does not affect the Mercantile Officers’ Association of New Zealand, whose dispute with the owners was settled some days ago.
