Football.
Cullensville V. Havelock.
The Havelock boys arrived in Mahakipawa on Saturday to try conclusions with our local boys at a game of football. The weather was wet and the ground was very sloppy, but this did pot prevent them from playing, both ; teams lined out in earnest. Havelock mustered fifteen and Mahakipawa twelve. The Havelock (whites) won the toss and took the kick-off, driving the ball well into the blues’ twenty-five, but it was well returned by Fitch, and rushed well into the white’s ground, where the play bung for a time. At last Litchfied secured the ball and with a slashing run took it on to the whites’ line, where
he, was brought odown by Fear and the ball was forced down. The ball was again set rolling, and the white forwards, working hard, began to force the blues back, and it was thought at this this ■stage of the game that Havelock would win, for no sooner would the blues pick up the ball than they would be brought down by the whites’ halves. But the blue boys were a bit knowing, and started punting, this soon altered the game, H, Thompson, Oliver, R. Mcßay, and Litchfield,’working together, took the play back into the whites’ twentyfive, where it again bung for awhile. H. Thompson secured the ball and kicked it over the line, where it was
touched down by the whites, The ball was again set going, and both teams, working hard,|kept the ball in the centre of the field until half-time was called. After a few minutes’ spell, the ball was kicked off by the blues* the forwards followed up well,, and again secured the leather in the whites’ twenty-fire. Here some very smart play was shown, the blues were determined to score, and the, whites were determined not to let them, but the passing of Thompson, Hayward, and Oliver, was too good for the whites, the ball was again got into Litchfield’s hands, and with another of his dashing runs, took the ball over the line, securing first blood for Mahakipawa. Fitch took the kick and potted a pretty goal. This got their tails up, the ball being
again set rolling, they soon had it back in the whites’ twenty-five, and not even the splendid collaring of I. Mills and P. Blackbee could stop them from forcing the leather on to victory, The whites tried the punting game, and tent the ball out of bounds, here a very laughable, but smart bit of play issued, the boys were brought up in line,, and J. Mcßay, taking the throw out, but finding himself not marked, took the advantage, and bouncing the hall, he made a smart ran; and was over the line before the white backs could say Jack Robinson. Fitch took the kick at goal, but failed to increase the score. Shortly after this, time was called, Mahakipawa winning by four points to nil.
