A Voice from Victoria.
Mr R. Hornby, who was a resident and well-known in this district, has written a letter to a friend in Havelock from Melbourne, from which we have been permitted to take the following:— “Yes, we'get good wages in this glorious country, but our “ high nominal wages are not real wages ” in this highly protective country. Everybody and everything is protected here; and New Zealand, if she adopts a similar tariff, will regret it, In fact, New Zealand is the best country both as regards its productiveness and climate—of any of the colonies. Now that they have stopped borrowing, and look to their future, by developing the resources of the country, the future looks very bright, and, depend upon it, in less than three years New Zealand will be the soundest and most prosperous colony of the whole lot. Everything points to that. At one time I was a Protectionist, but my views have entirely changed; I am a convert to Henry George’s views, and if you have not read his “ Poverty and Progress ” it will repay you to do so.' Re the Havelock Guardian, the numbers you forwarded me are very creditable indeed, and bear evidence of energy and ability in their production, and more than favourably compare with many newspapers published in Victorian townships with four times the population of the Havelock district. The news is well selected to suit the requirements of people living in a scattered, and, to a certain extent, isolated part of the Marlborough Province'. The amount of local news given quite astonished me, knowing, as I do, the difficulty there is in collecting it in such places.”
