A Crushing Battery.
Mr. Gordon, in his report on the Wakamarina reefs, stated that a battery was very much required. Yes, we are well aware of the fact, and it has been acknowledged long ago that a battery was necessary ; but the requisite funds have not been forthcoming to accomplish so desirable an object. We believe Mr Albert Adams used his best endeavours to get a sufficient amount to have a two-head stamper battery erected in a central position in this district, but his efforts were not seconded in a liberal spirit so the project had to be abandoned. This idea of sending an expert round the Colony reporting on the various mines at a, good round salary, puts us very much in mind of paying a medical gentleman to go round to visit the poor and sick, who recommends good warm clothing and nourishing food, at the same time knowing full well that they have not the means to get either; but the salary of the officer would have supplied all the necessary comforts if the sum had been used for such instead of finding work for one man. This district is well-knovn to contain any number of reefs which would pay to test in a proper and thorough manner, and we see no reason why the Government could not erect a test battery in this and similarly situated districts. We believe the cost of printing the report alone on the, mines of the Colony was between one and two thousand pounds, and that sum would buy half-a-dozen small batteries, and the practical results from the latter would be ten times greater than from the former, as the information contained in the reports has probably been printed over and over again in the newspapers. We do not expect the Government will do anything of the kind, because it might assist to develop the resources of the country, and that appears to be the last thing our legislators ever think of. The interests of the country are nothing as compared with the personal interests of our would-be statesmen.
