Important Discovery at Broken Hill. Death of Mr Poulson. * SYDNEY, July 13. ; The Hon. James White, the wellknown sportsman and squire of Kirkham*, died this afternopn from heart disease. He has beeii Suffering for some considerable time. July 14. A discovery has .been made of what is supposed to be the continuation of the Broken Hill silver lode at Goulta, 70 miles west of Wilcannia. Many applications have been put in for leases, and the ground will probably be rushed. Mr Poulson, who met with an accident on Sunday, had a relapse and died this afternoon. - French residents celebrated the fall of the Bastille by a'fete at Botany Bay. MELBOURNE, July 13. The Defence authorities are on the alert iu consequence of the cable interruptions, and the Cerberus has been ordered to proceed to the Heads, and torpedo boats are in readiness. No alarm ia felt, but this action is taken merely as a precautionary measure combined with drill. / July 14.Several extensive burglaries have been reported lately. Nissim's establishment was broken into and gold and silver watches to the value of £4OO stolen. July 15. The Naval and Military Club has decided to hold a naval and military tournament at the Exhibition building about the middle of, November. The tournament is k> : be open to the forces of the British Empire. ' • HOBART, July 15. Obituary—Mr Hogg, Principal of the Collegiate Institute. The deceased gentleman was a prominent Mason. Arthur Peake, recently deceased, has bequeathed a sum of £25,000 for the promotion of painting, sculpture, and astronomy at the Universities at Hobart, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Brisbane.-
