Mail Service.

IWe have received a letter from our I member, A. P. Seymour, Esq., asking for suggestions from those interested re amalgamation of present mail services in the Sounds into one weekly service by steam, at the same time making proper provision for those whichare now carried more than once a week, and must congratulate that gentleman on the action he is taking to benefit the settlers living in these isolated places. The services now in vogue are: (1) Picton to Port Underwood ; (2) Picton to Endeavor Inlet; (3) Picton to Tory Channel; (4) Picton to Grove or Anikiwa; (5) ManaroawVdveneperu, and Mr Seymour assures us that a service from Havelock to Maori Bay is promised by the postal authorities, so the great difficulty we have to compass is to formulate a plan that would embrace all the requirements mentioned without injury to either and be a lasting benefit to these old and new pioneers of settlement. Now we consider the most comprehensive scheme would be for a suitable steamer to leave Picton biweekly calling at Torea, Watermonger, Tory Channel, Endeavor Inlet, Township of Bulwer, Manaroa, Maori Bay, and Havelock, and picking up the outward mails on her re burn. In a very short time the benefits of this service would be appreciated. Every nook and cove along this grand highway would be occupied by settlers or fishermen. Thus settlement would be fostered at a small expense to the State, and those who have for many years past contributed to the consolidated revenue without receiving any direct return, could look forward to the pleasure of social intercourse with neighbours and the outside circle of friends at a cost within their means. While during the summer months as a resort for tourists in search of health-renewing breezes, with beautiful scenery the trip would present great attraction, and be a most enjoyable one.
