Protecting Homesteads.
A Sydney paper of a recent dale says :—A novel . proposition in the direction of protecting the hornes'eads of bankrupts involved in financial difficulties was submitted to the Legislative. Assembly yesterday by Mr Traill, who'moved,— ** Tnat leave be given to bring in a bill to maintain the people of New South Wales in possession of their homes, and for other purposes.” Ht explained that the bill W S still in the hands of the Govervmeut draughtsman, and, then fore, lie con’d not place it in the hands of members; bin, s iortly, its objects were thes •: .Some rears ago he heard first of the principles which he had embodied in the Bill being in existence in America, in what was known as the Homestead Act, This was an Act-which vested in the citizens of the Stale a Hght to a certain proportion and share < f property news* srry for the decencies of life. When such a bi ! l was in op ra ions no man cou d be stripped to the hone under the operations of the Insolvency C nrt. This principle appear, d to him an excellent one, and he then d rtermined to follow it up, and, if possi le, to introduce it into Australia. Consequently lie applied for, and obtained, copies of some of the Acts in force in the States, and he had adapted their provisions to the repuirements of this c u dry. The motion was rgreed to.
