Valuable Pictures.
The Figaro says the Earl of Dudley has sold to Mr Vanderbilt, the American millionaire, Turner’s great picture, * The Grand Canal at Venice/ for; £20,000. Borne interesting and important discoveries have (says the' London correspondent of the'Liverpool; Post) followed upon the muster of: 'pictures- for the exhibition of old; masters, now open at the Royal Academy. Among the contributions; was a picture by Romney, which the owner, an old maiden lady, was exceed-, ingly anxious to have insured for the sum of £SOO- She admitted that the amount seemed excessive, but the picture was a family heirloom, and she valued it at fully £SOO After the private view a gentleman who saw it wrote an offer to purchase it for £I7OO. This made the old lady open Her eyes, and when, a day or two later, a well known dealer offered her £4OOO, she said she would take time to consider. The, best known and shrewdest dealer in England has now offered her £6OOO- - the canvas, but he has not yet received notification of acceptance, of hs offer.
