OKARAMIO.
(From Our Own Correspondent)
Some time ago I promised to send you a few reports in connection with this district, but I concluded that you required all your space for more able scribes than myself; but I note that some of them are disposed to find fault with each others productions; a very easy matter to do, of course we are all born perfect in this line, self-included. Why, Mr Editor, the Guaboian ; was condemned’before it was printed, ,and our other local papers never as much as gave it a word of encouragement, but it is pleasing to note that the said paper is receiving encouragement of a more substantial nature;
Referring to this district I regret to state that the principal branch of industry here, namely, the timber trade, is in a very bad state, local demand almost nil, and the mills have large stocks on hand. Of course we have no wish to see, or hear, of . large fires to increase the demand, but we must hope for something better, namely, permanent prosperity. I must now mention that the Rev. Mr Ensor preached a very able and impressive senpoq & the .Qkaramio schoolrpom on Sunday evening last. The above-named gentleman is fast gaining ground, not only as a good apd earnest preacher, but as an orator of no mean standing. This district is represented by no less than four ministers of different creeds, but judging from what 1 can gather, and the ; meagre manner in which people contribute towards their support, it is a wonder how they exist, as it is no uncommon thing to receive a collection of two or 1 -three shillings from 1 a congregation of sixty or seventy.
