The little island of Atafer, in the South Seas, is said to be the only purely Christian country in the world. Every adult on the island is a member of the church on confession of faith. A proposal is under consideration for connecting Portsmouth with the Isle of Wight by means of a tunnel under the Solent. The travelling would be chiefly through blue clay, and the distance three and a half miles, The steel industry in the north of England is suffering from German competition, and thousands of workmen are being discharged. The steel manufacturers say they are no longer able to compete with Krupp and other foreign steel-makers. It is telegraphed from Rome that the prelates of the Vatican, fearing that the Italian Government may gobble the Papal library, are hiding the most valuable of their bibliological treasures. Many valuable manuscripts have already disappeared.
