ANNUAL SHEEP RETURNS.

OFFICIAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31st MAY, 1882. The total number of sheep in the Colony on that date was 12,408,106, as against 12,190,215 for the previous year, or an increase of 217,891. There are 207 more owners this year, making a total of 7,064. The classification of sheep in the Colony can approximately be taken as follows ;— Long-wools, 988,879 j cross-breds, 4,098,735 ; merinos, 7,320,492. Total — 12,408,106. Exported, 2,000 ; imported, 177 ; boiled down, 40,095; used at preserving works, 103,154. A reduction of 328,801 sheep in the infected list haa been effected. Of the 206,584 still infected, 171,600 are depasturing in Marlborough; 30,810 in the North Island, and 4,174 in the Nelson district. The total number of sheep in the Poverty Bay, County of Cook, cattle district, area 1,775,000 acres, was 231,801, belonging to 99 owners ; two of whom owned under 20,000; thirteen under 10,000; twenty-five under 5,000 ; fourteen under 2,000 : twentyone under 1,000; and twenty-four under 500.
